Los Angeles, California, USA
Downtown Los Angeles, California, USA
The San Gabriel Mountains dusted with snow acting as a backdrop to downtown Los Angeles.
It is said to be a rare sight to see and is a little different from the usual view of LA... the home of 'Hollywood' USA.
This unusual view of Los Angeles was sent in my our own 'personal correspondent' at large... my friend Ropa, to whom I am very grateful... and wish him and his wife well on their travels and for supporting my little venture with this blog. Many thanks Ropa and Mrs R!

Salamanca
This lovely postcard of the beautiful Plaza Mayor in Salamanca was sent to Postcards from the World by 'Ropaland', a member of our Gibraltar News Online Forum.
In his email, forwarding the postcard to me, Ropaland said:
"We picked up this post card of the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca, while driving back to Gibraltar. Indeed, my wife and I drank to your health while dining at the Meson Cervantes on the square. It seemed the appropriate thing to do having just purchased the card to send to you!!"
Now isn't that nice? I'm only sorry I was not there to return Ropaland's toast ... it might have been a long night!
My thanks to Ropaland and his wife (for her forebearance perhaps) not only for sending in this lovely postcard of one of my own favourite Spanish cities... but also especially for 'toasting my health'. I hope one day to be able to reciprocate, personally!

Salamanca (population 155,740) is a city in western Spain, the capital of the province of Salamanca, which belongs to the autonomous community (region) of Castile and Leon (Castilla y León).
The 'Old City' of Salamanca was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

History
The city was founded in the pre-Ancient Rome period by the Vacceos, a Celtic tribe, as one of a pair of forts to defend their territory near the Duero river. In the third century BC, Hannibal laid siege to the city. With the fall of the Carthaginians to the Romans, the city began to take more importance as a commercial hub. At this time it was called Helmantica or Salmantica. Read more...
Main sights
Salamanca is considered one of the most spectacular Renaissance cities in Europe.
Through the centuries the sandstone buildings have gained an exquisite golden glow that has given Salamanca the nickname 'La Ciudad Dorada', or the 'Golden City'. This golden glow is unique in Spain and is due to the 'Villamayor Stone', a type of sandstone coming from a quarry situated in Villamayor, a village close to Salamanca.
The Plaza Mayor is the central square in the city and is known as the 'living room' of the 'Salmantinos' (Salamancans). It was constructed by Andrés García de Quiñones at the beginning of the 18th century. The Plaza has a capacity of 20,000 people and is surrounded by shaded arcades. The Plaza was originally a venue for bullfights but is currently used primarily for concerts. The Plaza is regarded as one of the finest squares in Europe.
Next to the Plaza (Main Square) is the Central Market of Salamanca with typical fresh products of Spain. Read more...

Beirut
Received today from Rima... a resident of Beirut, the capital of the Lebanon... this lovely souvenir postcard of some sights around Beirut in the '50s she believes!
Thank you Rima... for submitting this nice postcard today!
Beirut - Information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beirut (Arabic: بيروت, Bayrūt) is the capital and largest city of Lebanon with a population of over 2.1 million as of 2007.
Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's coastline with the Mediterranean sea, it serves as the country's largest and main seaport and also forms the Beirut District area, which consists of the city and its suburbs.
The first mention of this metropolis is found in the ancient Egyptian Tell el Amarna letters, dating to the 15th century BC, and the city has been continuously inhabited over the centuries since.
Beirut holds Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy with its Downtown, Hamra, Verdun, and Ashrafieh based corporate firms and banks. The city is also the focal point of the region's cultural life, renowned for its press, theaters and cultural activities.
After the destructive Lebanese civil war, Beirut underwent major reconstruction and the redesigned historic city center, marina, pubs and nightlife districts have once again rendered it a popular tourist attraction.
Beirut was named the number one Place to Visit in 2009 by The New York Times. It was also listed as one of the top ten liveliest cities in the world by the Lonely Planet list of the top ten cities for 2009.

Big Ben and The Palace of Westminster - London
Our first postcard... a 'multi-media' souvenir postcard showing Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament) in London very kindly sent in by Penny... many thanks to you Penny!
Palace of Westminster - Information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament or Westminster Palace, in London, is where the two Houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (the House of Lords and the House of Commons) meet. The palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to the government buildings of Whitehall.
The palace contains around 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases and 4.8 kilometres (3 mi) of corridors. Although the building mainly dates from the 19th century, remaining elements of the original historic buildings include Westminster Hall, used today for major public ceremonial events such as lyings in state, and the Jewel Tower.

A note on Scanning your Postcards
Well... naturally, I'm really grateful to them for wanting to help build my collection and I can understand that not everyone has a scanner... but guess what? I haven't got a scanner either. I've never really found a use for one... so I can understand the many of you who may not also have a scanner!
Here's what to do. Many of my friends and family, I find, do have a scanner. Also, there's a little PC shop just across the road from me. For a matter of pennies, they are happy to offer a scanning service for images. As and when I have ever needed any image scanned, I've simply either asked my friends to do it for me... or, as a last resort, I've popped into my local PC shop and got them to do it. My local PC shop have charged me 50p for that.
Now that's not prohibitive is it? :)

Welcome to Postcards from the World
If you would like to participate, I would of course be very grateful for your help! :)
To participate, all you need to do is to obtain a suitable souvenir tourist postcard of your town, city or country or any place you are visiting or have visited... just scan it into .jpeg format and send it to me... and I shall publish it here!
If you haven't got a scanner... here's my advice on how to get your postcard scanned.
If you would like to include a greeting or brief description of yourself and your town, that would be great! In fact, that would be very welcome and will add further interest to your postcard and the page I publish it on... don't you think? But please... be brief!
As and when I can, I shall also include a link (and brief description) to a page on Wikipedia for your location. For instance, in my case it would be for Gibraltar where I am originally from. Here's an example of a published page, including a tourist souvenir postcard of Gibraltar.
So... if you would like to participate and help me build a nice collection of souvenir tourist postcards from around the world, here's what to do:
Once you have scanned your postcard, send your card (in jpeg format) to me:
Email me here with your jpeg file attached: cybernest @ gmail.com (Use the usual format - deleting the spaces) - Learn how to send images via email
If you have Skype - Add me and send me your card as a jpeg file:
Don't worry if I am not showing online - You can still add me and either send me a file or send me a message and I shall try and get back to you.
Please DO NOT send just any holiday snaps of places you've visited or other similar photograph... (especially rude ones - these will simply be deleted), as these are not suitable.
This site is about collecting tourist souvenir postcards of your location, your home town, city or country or of places yu have visited. Any OTHER type of card will NOT be published... ok? Good! :)
You can, if you wish, also leave a comment here using the form below to ask questions or whatever you wish to say.
Comments left on this page will be deleted after I have dealt with your query (unless it's in any way instructive for future visitors/inquirers).
I shall do my best to respond to ALL inquiries or comments... unless they are ignorantly abusive or SPAM... in which case they will simply be deleted!
For any other comments related to postings... please use the 'Comment' feature available at the bottom of every post.
